Prepare your skin for summer like an expert

The sun is a wonderful source of life. Its influence directly affects our well-being and helps the production of Vitamin D.

  • It helps to strengthen bones and teeth.

  • It improves mood.

  • Improves the appearance of acne-prone skin.

  • Helps to regulate sleep cycles.

  • Contributes to the proper functioning of the immune system.

  • Therapeutic use in psoriasis and cutaneous tuberculosis.

However, its virtues are not without their detrimental effects. Prolonged and unprotected exposure to the sun causes irreparable damage to our skin:

  • Formation of free radicals

  • Degradation of collagen and elastin fibres.

  • Burns.

  • Photo-ageing.

  • The sun is responsible for the appearance of 75% of wrinkles.

  • It produces alterations in pigmentation.

  • It is responsible for skin cancer in 90% of cases.

Your skin's capacity for self-protection is limited.

The Solar Capital is the skin's set of means of defence against solar aggressions, genetically determined at birth, it cannot be renewed and varies according to phototype.

Our solar capital is limited. After 20 years we have already used up 50% of our capacity.

To keep skin young and healthy it is essential to use sunscreen all year round, but especially in the summer months, when the skin is much more exposed and the sun's radiation is more intense.

When choosing your sunscreen, you should also take into account your skin phototype, UV index and exposure time. Especially in summer, it is important to take into account easy application, sun stability, maximum skin tolerance and water resistance, and above all, that it is respectful of the seabed and has a minimum impact on the environment.

Optimal protection against the harmful effects of the sun should combine physical and/or chemical sunscreens, capable of absorbing, diffracting and reflecting both UVB and UVA rays; and biological filters, active ingredients, which counteract the harmful effect induced by solar radiation on cells while restoring the skin's regenerative capacities.

When to apply sunscreen?

Sunscreen is an essential step in your routine 365 days a year. The Global Solar UV Index is a measure that indicates the intensity of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun at a specific location at a specific time. This index is used so that people can take appropriate precautions when exposed to the sun.

You can find the UV index for your location in the weather app on your mobile phone.

What is your phototype?

The phototype is a way of classifying skin types according to their resistance to the sun and their ability to tan. Knowing your phototype will help you to know the level of sun protection you need and the precautions you should take when exposed to the sun.

Tips to protect yourself from the sun in summer

  • Apply the sunscreen half an hour before sun exposure.

  • Repeat application frequently, especially after bathing, perspiring or drying yourself.

  • Avoid exposure to the sun between midday and four o'clock in the afternoon.

  • Avoid using colognes or perfumes as stains may appear.

  • Wear a hat, T-shirt and sunglasses for additional protection.

  • Exposure should be progressive, especially during the first few days.

  • Children are more susceptible to the harmful effects of the sun. Children under 6 months of age should not be exposed to the sun and sun exposure should be limited in children under 3 years of age.

How to tell if your sunscreen has expired

All sunscreens have an expiry date after which their effectiveness, protection and integrity is no longer guaranteed. Our experts recommend that you always check the expiry date and ODP of your sunscreen before applying it each summer.

Discover our tips for prolonging the life of your sunscreen.

  • When you're at the beach or pool, keep your sunscreen in your bag instead of leaving it directly exposed to the sun on your towel.

  • Avoid leaving sunscreen in the car, where high temperatures can damage it.

  • Keep the cream at home, in a dry place and at the right temperature to prevent bacterial contamination.

  • If you notice any change in consistency, colour or smell when you open it, it is best to discard it and replace it with a new one.
